The scene seemed like chaos.
A country ravaged by plagues of insects and elements grieved in chorus
as they frantically shoved over a million people out the door. A midnight summons had conveyed Pharaoh’s
command to “Up! Leave! And go!” so
Moses and company complied.
Those departing grabbed their stuff—along with some loot
from the neighbors—and headed out. Men,
women, children, “and large droves of
livestock, both flocks and herds” were driven past the border in such a
rush that their daily bread had no time to rise(Ex 12:38-39).
But what seemed like confusion on earth was neatly
orchestrated from heaven. “At the end of 430 years, to the very day,
all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt”(Ex 12:41). God had perfectly planned this event on
purpose for His purpose—to redeem His people from slavery and show the world
His great power and compassion. “I have raised you up for
this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be
proclaimed in all the earth”(Ex 9:16).
The scene seemed like chaos. Serene and sleepy moments in
the garden had been shattered by lights, shouts, a betraying kiss, and flashing
swords as calloused soldiers shoved Jesus toward arrest, trial, and
crucifixion. Jealous priests hurled accusations,
curious Herod demanded a circus, and weak Pilate caved to the pressures of
pride and power. To those watching in horror
with breaking hearts, Calvary’s cross was sudden, unexpected, and devastating.
But what seemed like confusion on earth was neatly
orchestrated from heaven. “When the right time came, God sent His Son…to
redeem those under the law”(Gal 4:4). God had perfectly planned this event
on purpose for His purpose—to rescue His people from the slavery of sin and
show the world His great power and compassion. “He has rescued us from the
dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves”(Col
1:13).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Egypt, God brought death to many sons so His people
could be free from a ruler.
On Calvary, God brought death to only One so His people
could be free forever.
The first was the hint that gave hope for centuries; the
final is the reality that brings certainty for eternity. As this Holy Week continues with Maundy
Thursday, Good Friday, Silent Saturday, and Resurrection Sunday, don’t let
earth’s chaos keep you from fully celebrating heaven’s grace.
That day was the right day for redemption. Today is the right day to rejoice. Greatly.
