Go Fish

“Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Mark 1:17

And suddenly Jesus was on the scene.

Even John didn’t know who He was until the Father split the sky and sent down the Spirit at His baptism, but from that moment on, everyone who met Jesus was faced with the choice to either receive and follow or refuse and walk away. The first four guys He called wisely chose the first.

Simon Peter and Andrew were busy on the job when Jesus showed up with the offer, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”(Mk 1:17).  A short stroll down the shoreline, Jesus summoned two more brothers in the same business, and “they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him”(Mk 1:20).

Peter and Andrew were casting their nets when Jesus called.  James and John were mending theirs, but all four dropped what was in their hands to join Jesus with their hearts.  They left behind familiarity and security to step into the unknown—all because of the One who called, “Come.”  Jesus didn’t promise power, position, or even a paycheck, but He offered real relationship and a reason for living. No benefit package could be better.

Jesus isn’t asking us to walk away from our jobs—the next catch in God’s great salvation net might be your boss or co-worker, but He calls us to drop our petty agendas for His perfect plan.  Knowing Him and making Him known are the highest callings and greatest delights to be found on earth, so whether we are selling, farming, teaching, patrolling, or doing “whatever our hands are finding to do”, our hearts should be about His business.

Each day Jesus beckons us to come nearer, to follow closer, and to let Him transform our focus from getting more stuff for ourselves to sharing His grace with others.  Don’t be fearful of dropping things that are familiar or that you make you feel secure; God will fill you with peace and provision beyond measure when you are on His mission.

Don’t hesitate when you hear Him call.
Choose to drop your nets and go fish.
