He Came For You

“Unto us a child is born; unto us a son is given...He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”  Isaiah 9:6

 He came for you.

Those words slammed me in the face as I rounded a neighborhood corner last week during an afternoon jog.  Lots of homes lining the streets sported various holiday decorations, but most required an extra boost to be their best. Wire reindeer needed the night to shine their wrapped lights, and nylon puddles of Santas and snowmen waited for an electric breeze to bring them to life, but that simple phrase, hand-painted on a large piece of hardware-store plywood, packed the same punch in dark or daylight.

 He came for you.

From eternity past, God planned for His coming.  All of history was sovereignly orchestrated so that “when the time was right,” Jesus burst onto the scene (Galatians 4:4).  Not to get glory—He left what was glorious.  Not for fame—here He would face sorrow and shame.  He wasn’t seeking praise—countless angels in heaven had declared His holiness.  He didn’t come for Himself—He came for you.

He came for the Tamars, the Rahabs, the Ruths, and the Bathsheebas.  For those crippled by fear and haunted by failure.  For those devastated by life and desperate for love.  For those separated from God because of their sin and headed for hell without any hope. He came for you. He came for me. He came for all.

He was purpose, protection, provision, peace, and salvation—all wrapped up in swaddling clothes. The best things really do come in small packages.

 He came for you.
